This experience Hadi Pradana Revelation Study in Belgium Scholarship Erasmus

Hello, Revelation. Greetings from berkuliah.com. By the way, before to tell her own profile, you ya?

My name Wahyu Hadi Pradana, born and raised in the area of Yogyakarta. I take the S1 in the Department of International Relations, University of Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. Thank God, I was given the opportunity to study at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium for 1 semester through Erasmus Mundus scholarship program of the European Union.

I am a bit confused explain what majors during my lecture at VUB. I first enrolled as a student majoring in Political Science, but for reasons of ease of administration, the campus (VUB) I moved to become registered as a student of Communication Studies. However, the movement did not change my study plan which was ready before I leave.

I took a course that was registered in two majors. Basically I took a course related to International Relations and Europe to support my studies in Indonesia.

Can you tell us about the university where tuition Revelation? What things are you like most of the campus?

I studied at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel is popularly called VUB in Belgium. In English, the name of the college I mean the Free University of Brussels. However, I could not use the name in English to refer to my college. Why so?

Officially, there are two languages spoken in Brussels, the Netherlands and France. All instructions, including street names, in two languages. Interestingly, almost all the institutions have two versions, the Netherlands and France, not least my college.

In short, there are two campus of the Free University of Brussels, a Dutch-speaking college ( Vrije Universiteit Brussel or VUB) and the French-speaking campus ( Universite Libre de Bruxelles or ULB). The two campuses are different campuses, and indeed they are popularly known as the VUB and ULB in Belgium.

There are many things I love about VUB. First, about the charge material. One of the reasons why I chose VUB is because I am interested to learn about the European Union. VUB is located in Brussels, in the heart of the European Union. As it turned out, my choice is not wrong. Lecturer I encountered not only academics but also practitioners in the fields they encounter. Imagine, you are taught by the class assistant minister. There are so many experiences that are shared and not in the books mostly theory.

Secondly, of course, the facilities. VUB campus is not the biggest and best in Belgium, if it is based on most world university ranking system. However, the amenities are very comprehensive, ranging from sports facilities, health, bank, career guidance centers, to tutoring with a psychologist.

The thing I love with such facilities is a library and tutoring. Approaching the exam, the library is open until midnight, and a study room (study center, as opposed to a library) is open 24 hours. I remember when going to final exams, the college opened the class with the guidance of a psychologist. For me, it is very helpful.
In addition to classroom atmosphere, test methods, and the method of taking the value is also different. So, okay to mentally prepare.
Third, international learning environment. VUB campus is relatively small, but the percentage of foreign students is high, reaching more than 10% of the total. Therefore, it is natural that in the classroom, I see different opinions and diverse. Very interesting and add my insights.

How to adapt to the system Revelation lecture? Is there a trick to try to get closer to the professor?

How to adapt to me is to listen carefully to what the lecturers instructions, hahaha. Sounds simple, but proved to be able to save my values. In addition, be sure to always read the material before coming to class and do not forget to record the best possible. Personally, I would not come to class if you have not read the material because it's useless, I will not catch explanation lecturers. When in class, the lecturer is not much to give material, lecturers invite more discussion. Thus, you can imagine how a discussion without knowing what exactly was discussed.

The easiest tricks to try to get closer to the lecturers are active in the class. However, my people who tend to be introverted and coincidence of the classes I follow all major classes, so I was less comfortable to dominate the discussion. My way is to ask right after the class session. Lecturers will focus on answering the question, and I also looked active, hahaha.

Is there anything menatik or funny ever Revelation encountered in the classroom?

It is interesting and very different in Indonesia I met during final exams. While in Indonesia, throughout the written test conducted in a room with a supervisor who is a campus administrative staff, lecturers may occasionally come to clarify or rectify the matter. However, at VUB, a lecturer waiting for a written test, even dividing question and answer sheets to students. Some professors do it yourself, others only assisted one or two research assistants. Lecturers could have waited a day of exam. I salute with it.

What language is used by people everyday Belgium? Are there any tips on how we can be more easily in the mix?

There are three official languages of Belgium: French, Dutch, and German. However, their use also depends on the region where. Simply put, there are three regions in Belgium: Flanders region that use the Dutch language, Wallonia region who use the French language, and Brussels in French and Dutch. German language is used in a small portion in the region of Wallonia.

I live in Brussels is bilingual. However, approximately 80% are French speakers, 10% of Dutch speakers, and 10% other languages. 'Woe' it, my college is a Dutch-speaking college and I took all the courses in English, while off-campus environment using the French language. Before leaving I was quite confused, but finally I decided to learn French. Fortunately, almost certainly the Dutch language speakers can speak English well.

There is no special tips to get along, it's simple friendly, courteous, and live like a local person. Do not forget to always say hello and say thank you.

Does Revelation has a favorite meal? If so, where is it and what its uniqueness?

I really love to one Vietnamese restaurant in the city center. Actually, it is not unique, just like normal other Asian restaurants. However, I really like the taste of the food. Especially when compared to European cuisine is less spicy. Enough can cure longing for Indonesian cuisine, hehehe.

For a typical Belgian food, I really like the fries that are sold near the Grand Place / Grote Markt (sort of the square). Enaaaak all, it feels fresh and there are a variety of sauces to choose from. Oh yes, most people recognize as French fries French fries, but in fact, we know that French fries come from Belgium, Belgian fries. Often the Belgian annoyed when we ordered French fries there, hahaha.

What cultural differences are most noticeably between Belgium and Indonesia? What is the attitude of Revelation on these differences?

Cultural differences that most feel is the culture of alcoholic beverages. I never drink alcohol and nausea if inhaling the smell lingered. In fact, every weekend night, nearly all the place is always crowded with people and alcohol and the easiest way to get along is to drink alcohol on weekends. For religious reasons and personal reasons, I do not drink alcohol. So in order not to isolate itself from the association, I usually follow the activities that have nothing to drink-drink events, such as a tour out of town.

Are there any tips that should be done for Indonesian students after college there? (For instance: employment opportunities there, etc.)

Tips which I suggest is keep in touch with friends and professors there. As an exchange student, I still have to write a thesis as a graduation requirement. My thesis themed Europe. Incidentally, flash disk that contains most of the data for lectures in Belgium damaged and all data is lost. Though I really need the data for my thesis.

Therefore, I asked my friend notes that are there. Although limited, the loan notes is quite helpful. Adalagi situasti when I really difficult to explain and prove the case in my thesis because of the limitations of books in Indonesia as a supporter. I finally ventured to contact me as a lecturer there. Fortunately, he remembered me and give explanations were very helpful.

Then if you became Minister of Education, approximately what would you do to make education in Indonesia better?

When I became Minister of Education, the thing I would do is change the curriculum. I think the burden for middle school students is too dense and too many, and the emphasis on outcomes such good value. Therefore, a lot of important things ruled out just to catch the value orientation is considered 'good'.

I want to let the burden of subjects in secondary schools, especially high school, lightened and began lessons are free to choose what you want to be explored, of course, continue to provide a compulsory subject. Thus, Indonesian students can practice to determine and be responsible for their own choices as early as possible and certainly no reason to dislike the lessons in school. Basically I want to create a pleasant learning climate.
